Building a future for an entire local population

A community at the service of inclusion for all

This local project at the service of a more humane and fairer world was created in 2010 to help the inhabitants of the peripheral and marginal neighborhood of San Isidro in Bogotá. In order to reduce poverty, Oasis encourages the personal and professional development of the inhabitants.

Oasis is located in San Isidro, in the northeast hills of Bogota, and is a peripheral and marginal area with an extension of 113 ha.

This area without legalization or at high risk generates unfavorable environments for the population, since it does not have the complete infrastructure of basic services in water, electricity, gas and basic sanitation essential for adequate living conditions.

Goals

A community at the service of inclusion for all

Alongside public and private, local and international actors, the Oasis project is based on 3 pillars:

Education : promote personal development and openness to the world at all stages of life, through fun activities, support around a life project, training and a focus on meetings in a space of sociability .

Housing : address the housing shortage and improve living conditions with financial, technical and human support.

Sustainable development : raise awareness of nature protection by developing a local recycling system for household waste, the reuse of cooking oils and the development of a community vegetable garden.

Main activities

A community at the service of inclusion for all

Construction of prefabricated houses

With the support of volunteers and the Oasis team, prefabricated houses are built with the support of a local foundation. The OASIS Habitat project also conducts a process of monitoring and supporting families who benefit from prefabricated housing.

Environment Committee

This committee aims to develop an awareness of the proper management of waste, for example: oil transformed into soap; old tires transformed into flower boxes: a little earth, beautiful plants and decorative painting…

The care of the water, the cleaning of the ravines near the neighborhood … all this allows to involve the inhabitants of the land and its place in everyone’s life as a provider of water, food, beauty , …

Ludoteca (Education and Culture for Peace)

This project, started in January 2015, aims to welcome children from 1 to 5 years old in the kindergartens of the sector to enjoy board games, puzzles, dolls, kitchen games, cars and other toys and hobbies, access to what they don’t have at home or in kindergarten. They are oriented towards activities such as painting with their hands, gymnastics or dancing with music for children and therefore they learn to share, to discover things together; and values such as respect and trust.

Social service in the territory (Education for peace)

This is an opportunity for students in the last years of high school, neighborhood and other sectors to fulfill the legal obligation to provide social service as a compulsory component of the curriculum for their integral formation and to contribute to the construction of their cultural and national identity, …

The different projects of Oasis allow them to carry out these courses through their dynamic of service to others.

Oasis Environment Project

It aims to build spaces with the community that generate a more friendly environment and with a greater degree of appropriation by the inhabitants, through three lines of action; Ecocuadras, urban educational gardens, circular economy through ecological products as tools for entrepreneurship.

A community at the service of inclusion for all

Eco Cuadra : It is a block in which between 20 and 40 families participate in the separation of usable waste in their homes, which is delivered to recyclers in the neighborhood who are part of a pre-cooperative.

Urban Educational Gardens : These are neighborhood public spaces and other private spaces where permaculture, urban agriculture and community work are taught to families, creating bonds of ownership.

Organics : We provide tools for entrepreneurship by teaching how to make organics by recycling cooking oil for soap making and coffee grounds as an exfoliant.

In recent months we have worked with children between 3 and 5 years old from a neighborhood garden in an exploratory process where we teach them the magic of planting, it has been a wonderful experience that we will replicate in other gardens
