Macy Ountaani Primary School (EPMO)

Contributes to improving access to the education system for Burkinabè children in rural areas.

To tackle the problem of school dropout, especially among young girls in rural areas, the Macy Ountaani Primary School (EPMO) operates in the very isolated village of Tambiga in Burkina Faso.

Started in the open air in 2002 with about twenty children followed by two young French volunteers in the village, EPMO has built over the years, 4 classrooms to accommodate students thanks to Fondacio’s partners.

Macy Ountaani Primary School is a private school run by Fondacio in Burkina Faso. It is located in the bush about 25 km south of Fada N’Gourma, in the eastern region of the country. This village includes several hamlets within a radius of about 4 km. School attendance is still struggling to materialize: in 2015, the net primary school enrollment rate in the East region was only 46.4%, while primary school is free in Burkina Faso. The main reasons for non-attendance or dropout are lack of financial resources to pay for school supplies and distance from schools. The nearest primary school to the village was located in Nagré, 12 km from Tambiga.

This project provides local people with access to quality education, especially for young girls in rural areas who are less likely to attend school. The populations of this zone live mainly from livestock and agriculture and are mostly young: in 2015, in the East region, 61.3% of the population was under 24 years old and the median age in rural was 14 years.

Since 2008, the high school for the promotion of young people (LPJ) has been pursuing its educational mission in Fada N'Gourma, capital of the Eastern Region of Burkina Faso. It wants to offer young people effective training, make them the citizens of tomorrow and promote the development of human society. It offers college and BEPC preparation courses, day courses (LPJ) and evening courses (EPJ) for young people and adults who have dropped out of school. The LPJ wants to offer young people the keys to success: a culture of success with BEPC results above the national average each year, strong supervision with student support, cultural openness with a library available to students and activities throughout the year, and a sense of student responsibility in school life. Each year, 30 to 40 children from low-income families benefit from partial payment of their school fees. The college averages about 600 students per year. The EPJ, on the other hand, allows adults and young people to return to evening school at a lower cost, while working during the day. The EPJ thus prepares students for the BEPC exams. On average, 300 students per year take part in these evening classes.

A school run by Fondacio EPMO Tambiga Macy Ountani Primary School (EPMO) is a private school run by Fondacio Burkina which is located in the bush, in the village of Tambiga, about 30 km south of Fada N'Gourma. It allows children in the region to attend primary school, even if the nearest public school is more than 5 km away. The village of Tambiga is marked by pastoral and agricultural activity where the habit of sending children to school is not yet well established. The presence of EPMO is therefore essential, especially since the good results have made its reputation over the years. For several years, the school has been working hard to mobilize the population around it: setting up a COGES, association of parents of students but also association of mothers of families, participation of parents in the renovation of buildings and canteen provision.

It is also linked to the municipal child and youth network and the local health centre, which is why it participates in fairs and cultural events or services several times a year (book month, women's fair, the youth ...). In 2018, the Los Almendros library welcomed more than 850 children through its various activities, 150 adults and 500 families living near the site. Year after year, this beautiful project continues to grow!
