Association for the Promotion of Youth

More than 900 young people from families in difficulty are supported by the Association for the Promotion of Young People (APJ – LPJ) thanks to quality education

The APJ was created in 1997 following the observation that, in the city of Fada (Burkina Faso), young people were left to their own devices and that they were seriously threatened by crime, unemployment and other juvenile plagues.

A needs analysis led the project to create a high school with only evening classes, then it opened its doors both during the day and in the evening. Indeed, the city has 48,500 inhabitants and only 4 colleges, 5 high schools and 2 vocational training centers.

The population is mostly young with a school enrollment rate of 52%. The final objective is to work for the growth of young people through:

  • the organization of moral, cultural and professional training and educational activities;
  • the provision of quality education and the provision of a library;
  • the creation of a framework and a meeting place to listen to young people and their difficulties in order to propose solutions.

The project includes 9 classrooms and an administrative building which has just been extended. The library built in 2014-2015 has been open since the first term of the 2015-2016 school year. There are more than 650 students in daytime classes and more than 250 people in evening classes, parents, teachers and indirectly a large population.

Tuition fees are charged and allow the college to be financially self-sufficient. Some students, from families in difficulty, are nevertheless supported by the school. Most teachers are temporary employees.

Since 2008, the high school for the promotion of young people (LPJ) has been pursuing its educational mission in Fada N'Gourma, capital of the Eastern Region of Burkina Faso. It wants to offer young people effective training, make them the citizens of tomorrow and promote the development of human society. It offers college and BEPC preparation courses, day courses (LPJ) and evening courses (EPJ) for young people and adults who have dropped out of school. The LPJ wants to offer young people the keys to success: a culture of success with BEPC results above the national average each year, strong supervision with student support, cultural openness with a library available to students and activities throughout the year, and a sense of student responsibility in school life. Each year, 30 to 40 children from low-income families benefit from partial payment of their school fees. The college averages about 600 students per year. The EPJ, on the other hand, allows adults and young people to return to evening school at a lower cost, while working during the day. The EPJ thus prepares students for the BEPC exams. On average, 300 students per year take part in these evening classes.
