OasisbyFondacio is an international solidarity project of Fondacio Colombia and the Emilio Valenzuela College Foundation, with ties to public, private and territorial actors.
History of Oasis
Oasis began its actions in the territory of San Isidro (Bogotá, Colombia) in 2011, as an initiative of Fondacio Colombia and the Fundación Colegio Emilio Valenzuela, with the leadership of Sandra Ardila and Gustavo López, co-founders and directors of the institution, who started this work offering an opportunity to young people at social risk.
In its beginnings, Oasis offered adolescents and young people an alternative occupation during their free time with days of sports and artistic activities. Today, Oasis has expanded its actions and serves other populations in the territory such as children, adults, allied institutions in the sector and the district school in the area, supporting educational and environmental issues.
Oasis has a double vocation: both for its own team, and for the territorial community, with a desire for sustainability.
It's is a place for personal development which benefits the team. Oasis allows personal and professional growth by favoring the development of everyone in self-knowledge and knowledge about the environment.
Oasis also tries to favor the autonomous development of people and the community within its projects.
One of Oasis' goals is to accompany beneficiaries, volunteers and allies in a dynamic that leads to solidarity and sustainable development.
Oasis articulates in a social context the pedagogy of Fondacio: to be for oneself, to be with others, to be for others with others, by friendship with and in the manner of the school of Jesus.
How do we do it?
The solidarity model by Fondacio consists in the synergy of the individual, community and technological dimensions energized by the transforming force of friendship. Therefore, Oasis builds alliances with institutions and associations that provide technical knowledge, human support and/or financing.
The complementarity between Oasis and the allies involved is exercised during different phases of the projects:
• At the beginning: it allows the population to access the service
• During: it favors the good performance of the actions
• After: it guarantees the sustainability of the benefit provided
Adrien, 30 years, VSI, 2 years in Oasis
"It's been almost a year since I came to Colombia with my 3 children and my wife Camille, who works as a volunteer in a center for children with disabilities in the south of Bogotá.
In Oasis, I am responsible for the finances and coordinator of the Environment project. I am very happy with my mission: I live an experience of friendship and multicultural reciprocity. What I like about Oasis is the local component. Finding myself like this; working in a neighborhood where I would have never set foot in if they (Fidesco) hadn't sent me here: I think it's a small detour into a quite incredible life.
When we start a mission, we often say that we carry out a voluntary mission to change the world, with many ideals; but when we return we realize that it is really our world that has changed. And I think that during this mission I feel this phrase completely, because an experience in Oasis is a complete break with our previous life: it is a geographical break, a break away from our family, as well as in the lifestyle and way of working. But it’s also a break of personal and emotional involvement, in short: it’s a big change compared to what I did before I came to Oasis. Now I have a totally different view of the world. Earlier I thought of some things as impossible to change. Now I tell myself that - in the end - nothing is impossible to change."
