In Sô-Zounko since 2003

Fondacio has been present in Sô-Zounko since 2003 and has developed literacy projects for adult women and men, artisans and fishermen, and tutoring for young students, as well as a library.

SÔ-ZOUNKO, a lake dwelling is being transformed to strengthen the self-management of the population and the empowerment of Fondacio’s projects on the lake.

Actions that concern young people and adults

Sô-Zounko is one of the lake towns of Benin which is part of the commune of Sô-ava on the shores of Lake Nokoué, about ten kilometers north of Cotonou. The population of Sô-Zounko is estimated at 15,650 inhabitants in 2014, 70% of whom live from fishing.

Fondacio has been present in Sô-Zounko since 2003 and has developed literacy projects for adult women and men, artisans and fishermen, and tutoring for young students, as well as a library.

The literacy and school support center offers several activities.

School coaching:

  • Tutoring offered each year to classes identified as the most difficult mock exams for elementary school
  • Library: A small library in the center provides children with books and textbooks and a taste for reading.
  • Literacy: literacy courses in Fon and French for adults and young people, especially women.

These projects meet the needs of a poor population with a high rate of illiteracy and school dropouts. Mastery of languages (French and Fon) and the ability to count allow women to better monitor their economic activities and increase their income

To sustain these projects and develop new projects, young people were trained at IFF Africa and Porto-Novo in the field of animal production and marketing for the establishment of an income-generating activity (IGA ), and fish farming.
